Going back to college as an adult can feel overwhelming. You might be juggling work, family, and a dozen other responsibilities. But thousands of students are doing it, and succeeding. We asked our Fall 2024 Scholarship Winners “What would you tell someone thinking of returning to college?” Their real advice is honest, practical, and inspiring.
Whether you’re thinking about re-enrolling or already in your first class, here’s what they want you to know:
1. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s going to be worth it.
“You have to stay focused and take it seriously. This is your future and it’s all in your hands. It’s not going to be easy but it will be worth it.”
2. Set small goals.
“Don’t give up. Set goals. If you feel overwhelmed, set small goals. I set weekly goals and it keeps me motivated. When you feel overwhelmed reach out to your coach and professor. They are there to help.”
3. Don’t wait for the ‘perfect time.’ It doesn’t exist.
“If you are thinking about going back to college, the time to start is now! You will always have something in the way, something you can use as an excuse to not start. But if you really want this for yourself, you’ll make it happen.”
4. Give yourself grace.
“It’s ok to be overwhelmed. It’s ok to cry. It’s ok to be tired. But don’t stop. Take a break if you need to, then keep going.”
5. You are not alone.
“It’s okay to be scared. It’s okay to be nervous. But remember – so is everyone else. You’re not doing this alone. Ask for help when you need it. That doesn’t make you weak, it makes you smart.”
6. You’re stronger than you think.
“I was terrified. I didn’t think I could do it. But I just kept showing up, and now I’m halfway to my degree. You can do it too.”
7. One class at a time. One day at a time.
“Take it slow. It’s not a race. You’re not behind. Just keep going, even if it’s just one class at a time.”
You’ve got this.
If you’re thinking about returning to college, or if you already have, take to heart the words of real advice from those who’ve walked this path before you. The journey isn’t easy, but it’s full of growth, pride, and transformation. And you don’t have to do it alone.
